English, why is it so important? Why does everybody want to learn English?

Today, our world is becoming smaller as our connections to one another increase. Lands that were once thought to be so distant are now just a phone call or video call away.

English may not be the most widely spoken language spoken by native speakers, but it is the language most commonly used when interacting with other countries, especially in business.

Why is that? You see, English is the official language in 67 countries with about 380 million people who speak English as their first language. That might not seem like much because Mandarin Chinese is spoken by 1.3 billion people. But English is also the second language in over 118 countries. There are actually more than 753 million people who speak English as a second language. So, there are a lot of countries where English is spoken.

That is why it is so important. English may not be spoken natively by as many people as Mandarin or Spanish, but it is spoken around the world. So there is no wonder that English is used for international communications. Most international business communications are conducted in English. And over half of the most-visited websites world-wide are published in English.

The internet has brought us together, and the language that has brought us together is English.
